Monitoring children's development
On June 9-10 2020, WHO hosted a virtual technical meeting to discuss approaches for monitoring children's development in primary care services. The discussions focused on how to improve the identification of and support for children who are at risk of sub-optimal development and their families. Read the report here.

This report of a virtual technical meeting hosted by WHO on 9-10 June 2020 summarizes discussions on how best to monitor children 0 - 3 years of age for risk of developmental delay, disorder or disability in primary care services, considering factors at the level of the child, the family and the community. Participants highlighted the importance of considering a broad array of factors when identifying children who are at risk of sub-optimal development and their families. Participants articulated the importance of adopting strength-based approaches in which developmental monitoring is embedded within strong services of counselling and support. The role of primary care givers for providing this support was well recognized.

WHO explains why nurturing care matters for children's development
In an interview with the Open Access Government journal, the World Health Organization explains why enabling young children to achieve their full developmental potential is a human right and an essential requisite for sustainable development. More.

New - Key messages
The COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges but it has also offered new opportunities. We need to get creative about using these opportunities to talk about and embed nurturing care. We need to come together as a global community and align our asks. To help you do this, the Advocacy Working Group has put together a set of five key messages to help you frame what we expect of health systems in the context of COVID-19 and beyond. The document Improving early childhood development through health services during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond and accompanying social media materials are available in English, French, and Spanish here.

Nurturing care for children affected by HIV
A new brief makes the case that ensuring children affected by HIV survive and thrive requires applying a nurturing care lens to routine maternal, newborn and child health services, as well as HIV prevention and care services. It outlines what is already happening and what can be done to maximize opportunities within existing health services to change the life trajectory of young children affected by HIV for the better. It's a bit radical but it's a starting point. Below that are some explanatory notes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CURRENT STRUCTURE HOME - No sub-pages ABOUT - Why nurturing care - The 5 components of nurturing care - How did we get here - Who is involved? - Frequently asked questions SUCCESS STORIES - Country success - Global and regional success RESOURCES - Nurturing care framework toolkit - Publications - Country profiles - Videos and webinars - Training materials NEWS AND EVENTS - Events - Map of events - News and features - Eblast ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUGGESTED RESTRUCTURE HOME - No sub-pages ABOUT - when you see my comments further below this will make more sense. but perhaps the pages are - about nurturing care, about the nurturing care framework for ecd - each of these pages couldl have collapsable sections with more info. - What is nurturing care? - Why nurturing care? - Frequently asked questions this is meant to be FAQ abou tthe NCF (not nc) but i think still useful to have as it's own page SUCCESS STORIES - No sub-pages RESOURCES - Toolkit - Publications - Country profiles NEWS - No sub-pages EVENTS - No sub-pages ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some explanatory notes The main goal here is to flatten the structure and reduce the number of sub-pages. Moving to the new structure would involve: 1) DONE Creating a new page under 'About' called "What is nurturing care?". This would bring together the content from: * The 5 components of nurturing care * How did we get here? * Who is involved? I would like to suggest it begins with a new 'Introduction' paragraph, for those who know absolutely nothing about NCF. What is nurturing care and what is the NCF for ECD are two different things. Perhaps we can have one page for each. The 5 comps of NC woudl go in the first page. How did we get here and who is involved would go in the second page. The intro para about NCF could go on this second page too - see FAQ no. 1 - that is the boiler plate text all agencies agreed to use for explaining the framework 2) DONE Bringing together the two pages "Country success" and "Global and regional success". The new pages would simply be "Success stories" I'm ok with this. Would it be possible to search things on this page? Would we file Word from our partner stories here once they move from the home page? 3) DONE (ie this just needs menu adjustment) Separating Events from News. There would be a new menu item 'Events' that goes straight to our main Events page. People would access the Map of events from here. ok 4) DONE The News page would incorporate the news stories and (in the right hand column) links to the eblasts, along with a list of the contents of each.ok 5) The Resources section would bring together "Videos and webinars" and "Training materials", placing them as new sections on the Toolkit page. so we need to distinguish between resources that have been developed under the NC umbrella (have the NC logo) and those that there are non NCF-branded materials. The toolkit is meant to only include items with the NC brand. Things under V and W or Training materials are materials that have been developed outside of us. Ideally, over time, they would go on ecdan (ecdan plans to curate and have a repository of all materials). Hence why we've tried to keep it a bit separate on our site. Now that you have this context what would you suggest?

Brief: An integrated approach for children and adolescents affected by HIV and AIDS
The Coalition for Children Affected by AIDS has produced a brief on what donors, policy makers, implementers and civil society can do to deliver integrated support for children and adolescents affected by HIV and AIDS. Those who face social and structural exclusion must be prioritised if we are to achieve HIV targets and broader SDGs. The most vulnerable are beyond the reach of mainstream services – that must change. Combining services and support in a comprehensive programme achieves far more and uses fewer resources. The Nurturing Care Framework can transform the life course of these children.

ARNEC supports nurturing care for young children in Asia

The Asia-Pacific Regional Network for Early Childhood (ARNEC) has published an advocacy brief for partners to advance the Nurturing Care Framework in the Asia-Pacific region. The brief outlines what is nurturing care, why it is important for children's development, how attention to nurturing care can help achieve the SDGs, and provides ideas of what can be done to promote nurturing care in the region.
